Recap of November CFO Forum at University Club

The fifth and final CFO Forum of 2007, was held on Wednesday November 7 at the University Club of Chicago.

The program, entitled Building International Business Relationships That Can Improve Your Bottom Line, was presented by Jeff Walsh and Karen Cornelius of KLC Associates. Jeff and Karen led a lively discussion of cultural diversity in global organizations. Attendees discussed business etiquette and cultural norms across the globe and learned techniques for communicating with employees and clients in other countries. One take-away was that understanding how to communicate properly with individuals in other cultures can make the difference between profiting greatly or going bankrupt in business situations.

The Chicago Fed Hosts 43rd Annual Bank Structure Conference

On May 16–18, 2007, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago will hold its 43rd annual Conference on Bank Structure and Competition at the Westin Hotel in Chicago. Since its inception, the conference has encouraged an ongoing dialogue and debate on current public policy issues affecting the financial services industry. Each year, the conference brings together several hundred financial institution executives, regulators, and academics to examine current policy issues.

The 2007 conference will address a number of issues including Basel II capital regulation, payday lending activity, the changing real estate markets, risk management, financial stability, banking industry structure, and government-sponsored enterprises. However, a number of sessions will be dedicated to the conference theme: The Mixing of Banking and Commerce.

Highlights of the conference will include:

• Opening keynote address by Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke.
• A special luncheon presentation by FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair.
• A special luncheon presentation by Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox.
• A panel discussion of the conference theme. What are the benefits? Costs? Regulatory and supervisory issues associated with the mixing of banking and commerce?
• A special presentation by The Honorable James A. Leach, Former Chairman of the House Committee on Banking and Financial Services, U.S. Congress.

As usual, the Wednesday sessions (May 16) will showcase more technical research that is of primary interest to research economists in academia and research agencies. The Thursday and Friday sessions are designed to address the interests of a broader audience.

On Tuesday May 1, BroadPeak and Vedder Price partnered to host our third CFO Forum of 2007.  Hope Schall, an attorney at Vedder Price was our host at the Vedder Price offices in downtown Chicago.  The venue was wonderful and the folks at Vedder Price really did a great job of making everyone feel welcome.  Thank you Hope!

Our speaker, Ed Maier of the Maier Consulting Group, gave a fantastic and interactive presentation entitled "Communicating the Tone from the Top".  Ed talked to the group about the importance of understanding different communication styles in order to effectively deliver messages throughout an organization.  One thing that Ed said really stuck with me:

"People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."

The point was that if you don't connect with the folks that you manage they may not be fully committed to their jobs or the organization.  It's an important concept that we should all spend some time thinking about.  We rounded out the morning with a fun exercise designed to show us that we all have different communication styles. 

I have been to similar presentations before but this one was a standout because of the presenter, Ed Maier. Before becoming a full time executive coach and leadership development expert Ed led a regional practice for one of the Big 4 professional services firms.  His practice generated annual revenues in excess of $360 million and employed more than 1,300 professionals and 80 partners.  The point is that Ed has actually utilized the techniques that he teaches to drive profits in a competitive environment.  That makes him very different than many other "executive coaches" who don't have that kind of experience. 

We had a great turnout and it seemed like everyone was engaged in the presentation as well as in the networking before and after the session.  Thanks to all who attended!

Upcoming Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago Conference

New Developments in State Business Taxation

On April 4, 2007, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the National Tax Association of the University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs will co-sponsor a conference on state business taxation.

This half-day program will examine both recent changes and proposed changes to business taxation by the states. In particular the program will examine the gross receipts tax, expanded service taxation and application of other business oriented fees.

The conferece will be held in the Third Floor Conference Center at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, 230 S. LaSalle Street, Chicago, IL.
